The ongoing rain has caused slips and road closures around the region. Council teams and contractors have been working at multiple sites to clear and stabilise these.

As the wet weather continues it’s important to know what to do to keep safe 👇

Take extra care when travelling around the region, especially in hillier parts where more landslips may occur as the wet weather continues.

Follow the instructions of roading crews and any detours that are in place.

Plan travel – check your local council website/social media for the most up to date information on local road closures and follow Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Wellington for State Highway updates.

Clear stormwater drains and gutters to help prevent surface flooding.

Kept natural overland flow paths clear. If they are impeded it can cause surface water to flow where it is not supposed to.

Large trees can become unstable when grounds are saturated. Seek arborist advice on large trees on your property. They can advise on maintenance to keep them stable.

Take steps to be prepared by making a household plan and a Grab Bag of essential items for if you have to evacuate at short notice.
