Mana MP Winnie Laban highlights the contribution of volunteer workers in Kāpiti for Volunteer Awareness Week 20 to 26 June.
There have been several scheduled events in Mana over the week to celebrate the role of volunteers in the community. The theme of this year’s Volunteer Awareness Week is ‘Volunteering across the generations’.
“I would like to thank all volunteers who give their time and energy to activities and organisations in Kāpiti. Their contribution is valuable and benefits our community in many positive ways.” Ms Laban said.
“The launch celebration earlier this week of Volunteer Kāpiti and promotional stall at the Coastlands Shopping Mall is a great opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in the Kāpiti area and the many organisations and groups across New Zealand who provide 270 million hours of unpaid labour to the community and voluntary sector”
“Volunteering can be a life long contribution and also a way of developing some of our future community leaders. That New Zealand’s non-profit sector contributes 2.6% to GDP and this increases to 4.9% of GDP when taking into account the volunteer labour contribution highlights the significance of the sector and role in the community and civil society”, Ms Laban said.
