Public transport advocate Colin Baxter has described as outrageous mayoral candidate Chris Turver’s claims that he will get a train station built at Raumati.
“Surely Chris Turver realises that the four lane Kāpiti motorway he is pushing for means that there will be less need for a train station at Raumati.
“Study after transport study show that with bigger roads, more people are encouraged to travel by car, not rail,” said Mr Baxter.
“Also the money that would be needed for this station is being spent in cutting through the heart of our region with Minister Joyce’s motorway. It is better to build a local road for only $120million and use the difference to enhance SH-1 and rail services.
“What will he promise next? Electrification to Palmerston North? It looks like he will follow any cause that he thinks will gain him votes.”
Mr Baxter says there are more signatures on the ASK petition than there were on Mr Turver’s pro motorway petition.
“And there are more signatures against the road than completed forms as part of the NZTA consultation process.”
