The Kāpiti Petanque Club completed its nationally ranked Open Doubles tournament with the title going to Hawkes Bay visitors Sharon Cannon and Morris Betz.
The tournament played in perfect conditions on day one featured teams from as far afield as Dunedin and Auckland with players chasing national ranking points from this prestigious event.
Kaye and Kath Alison fared best of the locals with six pool match wins but came unstuck when the wild weather kicked in on day two.
Leading the way was the Napier pairing of Sharon Cannon and Morris Betz who play out of the Bayview Club. In a top quality final which saw the lead change four times they defeated Wairarapa duo Joan Miller and Claire Wilson 13-9.
Club President Kevin McFadgen said the event was a huge success, despite the weather.
“The quality of play was outstanding throughout the weekend. We attracted 44 pairs from around the country and even though the conditions were fairly brutal on the final day the games were of the quality you would expect from four national reps.”
