Police action during Operation Kereru overnight in the Wairarapa led to more than 50 infringements being issued and several vehicles seized, disrupting a planned illegal road user event.
Wairarapa Police, employing a zero-tolerance approach, established checkpoints throughout the region to curb anti-social driving behaviour before it escalated. As a result, vehicles gathering for the event were intercepted and dispersed before midnight, according to Wairarapa Area Commander, Inspector Nick Thom.
“As a result of the fantastic work by staff, the vehicles that had gathered were intercepted and had left the area before they were able to get started, all before midnight,” Thom said.
In addition to issuing over 50 infringements, Police served ten non-operational orders. Two vehicles were seized by Bailiffs, and another was impounded. Two drivers were found to be over the legal alcohol limit and have been summoned to court, while another individual was arrested for driving while suspended.
Wairarapa Police continue to work with staff across the Wellington region to disrupt anti-social behaviour and hold offenders accountable.
Police are encouraging the public to report unlawful activity as soon as possible, either via 111 for urgent incidents or via 105 for later reporting. Anonymous information can also be shared through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
Authorities say timely reporting helps ensure safer roads for the Wairarapa community.
