Porirua’s Bothamley Park Reopens After Major Upgrade

Bothamley Park in Porirua has fully reopened following a two-year closure for a significant wastewater pipe upgrade.

The project, part of the Government’s $1 billion Te Rā Nui – Eastern Porirua Development, saw 3km of wastewater pipes replaced, doubling their size to prevent 40,000m³ of sewage overflow into Kenepuru Stream and Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour each year.

Kāinga Ora also resealed the Champion St carpark, resurfaced walking and cycling tracks, and replaced pine trees with native plants.

Project director Will Pennington said the work would improve the environment and support new housing in eastern Porirua.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker welcomed the reopening, calling the project “crucial” for the city’s future.

Construction of a new wetland and a reservoir for clean and emergency water supply is set to begin later this year.
