Police believe a man wanted in connection with seven arson attacks in Masterton last month is actively evading arrest, possibly with assistance.
Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund said a warrant was issued for 44-year-old Michael Kane McRae on 25 February, three days after a series of fires targeted six churches and a local business in the early hours of 22 February.
“Despite wide-ranging enquiries, McRae has not been located,” Skoglund said. “It is likely that he is actively avoiding arrest and is getting help in his efforts to hide from us.”
Police believe McRae is still in the Wairarapa area and are warning anyone assisting him to come forward.
“My message to anyone helping him evade capture is: come forward now. Do not put yourself at further risk of prosecution,” Skoglund said.
Members of the public are urged not to approach McRae but to call 111 immediately if they see him.
Police are also seeking information about a green Ford Festiva, which was seen leaving one of the fire sites on 22 February and was later found abandoned on Mikimiki Road. Investigators are working to track the car’s movements before and after the fires.
