Porirua’s Postgate Park to Get Exciting New Bike Track

A new bike ‘pump’ track is set to transform an under-utilised section of Postgate Park in Whitby, providing a dynamic space for riders of all ages.

The 1000 sqm asphalt track, designed for bikes, scooters, and skateboards, is the vision of Whitby resident Daniel Heath and the Mana Cycle Group. Heath spearheaded the fundraising effort to cover the entire project cost, ensuring no financial burden on ratepayers.

“This is going to be a world-class track built by Velosolutions, who are global experts in this type of construction,” says Heath. “Their tracks are even used for regional and national competitions.”

The track’s location will make it easily accessible from Whitby, eastern Porirua suburbs, and Bothamley Park. Heath said the idea emerged during Covid lockdowns when local schools built bike tracks but lacked space and resources for more advanced features.

“I felt as a community we could do better,” he said. “There is plenty of space at Postgate Park, and even with the track at one end, much of the park will remain available.”

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker praised the project. “It’s going to be an asset for our residents and visitors,” she said. “I congratulate Daniel and the Mana Cycle Group for their hard work in making this happen.”

Construction is set to begin in mid to late April, with completion expected in six weeks.
