Wellington Phoenix’s Women’s A-League team secured their fourth consecutive unbeaten match with a commanding 2-0 victory over defending champions Sydney FC on Saturday at Porirua. The win, delayed by a halftime thunderstorm, marked a turning point for the Phoenix as they climbed six spots to fourth place on the league table.
Grace Jale and Zoe McMeeken scored decisive goals in the second half, showcasing the Phoenix’s resurgence after a tough start to the season. With this victory, the team achieved a neutral goal difference, a significant improvement following three initial losses.
The match began as a defensive struggle, with Sydney FC creating early opportunities. English forward Millie Farrow tested Phoenix goalkeeper Carolia Vilao but failed to convert two clear chances, leaving the score tied at halftime amid torrential rain and lightning.
After a delayed restart, the Phoenix took control. Jale broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a long-range shot that slipped past Sydney goalkeeper Tahlia Franco. Near full-time, McMeeken secured the win with a powerful header off Annalie Longo’s corner.
“We were a little flat in that first 45 [minutes],” says Longo, Phoenix captain. “The rain and lightning meant we had to restart with more energy and fight. It wasn’t pretty, but three points and very proud of the girls.”
This win sets up a challenging encounter for the Phoenix next Saturday against league leaders Melbourne City in Melbourne, where their revitalized form will be put to the test.
