Local netball talent Parris Mason, a key player for the Pulse, is set to make her highly anticipated debut for the Silver Ferns in the upcoming Taini Jamison Trophy series against England. The series will include three Test matches. The second is to be played in Porirua at Te Rauparaha Arena, 7:30pm, 2 Oct 2024, providing a special homecoming for the promising young defender.
Mason’s selection for the Silver Ferns marks a significant milestone in her blossoming career. Known for her athleticism and versatility, Mason has steadily developed her skills since joining the Pulse in 2021. Her dedication and impressive performances in the ANZ Premiership, particularly as a goal defender, have earned her this prestigious opportunity to represent New Zealand on the international stage.
Returning to Pulse colours in 2023 after a season with Central Manawa, where she played a pivotal role in their title-winning campaign, Mason has demonstrated her readiness for elite competition. Her journey began at Manukura school, and since then, she has consistently excelled in multiple sports, including basketball and touch rugby. Notably, Mason was part of the NZU21 netball team in the 2020 Cadbury Series and played for the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa champions, the Tokomanawa Queens, in 2022.
As Mason prepares to don the Silver Ferns jersey, she joins fellow debutante Claire O’Brien, who has also been named in the squad. Their inclusion reflects head coach Dame Noeline Taurua’s strategy of blending fresh talent with experienced players as the team begins a new cycle leading up to the 2027 Netball World Cup.
The Taini Jamison Trophy series kicks off on 29 September in Auckland, followed by the much-anticipated Porirua Test on 2 October. The local community is eagerly awaiting the chance to support Mason as she takes the court for her first appearance as a Silver Fern.
Mason’s debut is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for the Pulse and the Porirua region, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from New Zealand’s heartland. As she steps into this new chapter, Mason’s journey is a testament to her hard work, resilience, and the strong support from her local community.
The Silver Ferns will face a formidable opponent in England, with the series expected to provide a clear indication of where the team stands as they build towards future international competitions. The Porirua Test promises to be an exciting event, with local fans ready to cheer on their homegrown star as she takes her place among New Zealand’s netball elite.
