In a significant strike against organised crime, New Zealand Police have arrested 20 individuals and seized over 260 kilograms of illicit substances as part of a coordinated “Week of Action” under Taskforce Morpheus. This joint trans-Tasman initiative, involving collaboration with Australian law enforcement agencies, targeted motorcycle gangs and organised criminal groups, culminating in 28 search warrants executed across New Zealand from 5 to 9 August 2024.
Among the seized items were over $520,000 in cash, three firearms, and the uncovering of a clandestine drug laboratory in West Harbour, Auckland. The operation also resulted in the arrest of several gang members and associates, with more than 200 charges laid, including drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession.
Detective Superintendent Greg Williams, Director of the National Organised Crime Group, emphasised the significance of the operation in combating the rising threat of gang-related crime in both New Zealand and Australia. “Taskforce Morpheus highlights our strong trans-Tasman relationship, which contributes to a more effective approach to tackling transnational organised crime in our communities,” he stated.
The crackdown included several key operations:
- Waitematā District: Simultaneous raids in Henderson and West Harbour led to the seizure of 68 LSD tabs, 180 grams of methamphetamine, and precursor materials for drug production. Two individuals were arrested, including a senior gang member.
- Wellington Region: Police executed raids in Churton Park and Waikanae, resulting in arrests and the seizure of $20,000 in cash, firearms, and a variety of drugs, including methamphetamine and cannabis.
- Dairy Flat: A patched Rebels gang member was apprehended, with authorities seizing 58 kilograms of methamphetamine, two handguns, and ammunition.
Additionally, two long-running investigations—Operation Havana and Operation Fix—targeted international drug syndicates, leading to further arrests and significant drug seizures. Operation Havana, focused on a Chinese syndicate, resulted in the seizure of 183.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and $500,000 in cash. Operation Fix, targeting a Mexican crime syndicate, led to the discovery of 180 kilograms of methamphetamine in Tauranga and multiple arrests.
Detective Superintendent Williams noted that the “Week of Action” underscores ongoing efforts by police and partner agencies to disrupt criminal activity and ensure public safety. The coordinated actions across New Zealand’s 18 prisons and enhanced border screening by Customs further illustrate the comprehensive approach taken during this operation.
New Zealand Police have expressed gratitude for the support from Australian authorities, highlighting the operation as a testament to the effectiveness of international collaboration in the fight against organised crime.
