Porirua City Council is inviting public submissions on a resource consent application submitted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Trust Board. The proposal seeks approval to establish and operate a community facility at 2 Okowai Road, Aotea. The development will include a temple, an ancillary building, and several accessory structures, along with landscaping and a 74-space carpark.
The application, referenced RCA23114 (RC8897), details plans for a temple building with a gross floor area of approximately 1,353 square metres and a spire reaching a height of 37.475 metres. The ancillary building will have a gross floor area of approximately 1,330 square metres and stand 9.96 metres tall.
Key activities in the development include vegetation clearance, tree removal, and extensive earthworks. The facility is designed to accommodate up to 208 people, though it is expected that typical occupancy will be around 50 people, excluding staff. The temple will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, with night-time illumination planned for the carpark, temple façade, and selected landscaping areas.
Public notification of the application is mandatory under the Resource Management Act. The full application, including an assessment of environmental effects and supporting documents, is available for inspection at the Porirua City Council’s Customer Service Centre or online on the council’s consultation website.
Community members have until Tuesday, 20 August, to submit their feedback. For further information or to make a submission, visit the council’s consultation website or contact the council directly at [email protected] or by phone at 04 237 5089.
