Porirua City Council has announced an exciting opportunity for local artists to contribute to a new LGBTQIA+ mural in central Porirua. The mural, proposed by Aotea College’s student rainbow group, will be a prominent feature in Ferry Place, Te Manawa, celebrating inclusion and diversity in the community.

The 22m² mural will be created off-site on four ACM sign panels in the artist’s studio before being installed on a wall in Ferry Place. The project seeks to reflect themes identified by Rainbow Aotea, focusing on native birds in LGBTQIA+ flag colours, a Picasso-style rainbow flag, bold and “obviously gay” imagery, and elements unique to New Zealand.

Artists are invited to submit an A4 sketch concept incorporating one or more of these themes by 27 August 2024. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].

A panel including rainbow rangatahi will assess the submissions, and two concepts will be selected. The chosen artists will receive $500 each (plus GST if registered) to develop their sketches into full mural designs. These designs are due by 24 September and will be evaluated by the Council’s Arts Panel. The final design will be selected by 15 October.

The successful artist will be commissioned to complete the mural, with a total fee of $9,000 (plus GST if registered). The artist will need to paint, seal, and deliver the panels to Ferry Place by 10 December. While the Council will provide the ACM panels, the artist must supply all other materials, including Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield.

This mural initiative is a significant step towards promoting visibility and celebration of Porirua’s rainbow community, reflecting the city’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
