Ngā Manu Kōrero, one of the most significant events on the Māori education calendar, is renowned for nurturing oratory skills and providing young people with a platform to express their views. This prestigious speech contest aims to develop the skills and confidence of Māori students in both spoken English and te reo Māori, attracting an audience of peers, parents, whānau, and judges.

At Tawa College, this year’s Ngā Manu Kōrero event saw remarkable success for the students of Mana College. Among the standout participants was Tutanakai, whose speech was both hard-hitting and lyrical. He addressed the sensitive issue of tamariki Māori in state care, shedding light on the damage caused by a system designed “to help.” His brave choice of topic and powerful delivery left a lasting impact on the audience.

The highlight of the event was Tane Mill, a Mana College student who secured 1st place in the Ta Turi Kara – Junior English section. This victory means he will represent Te Whanganui ā Tara ki Ōtaki at the National competition in Tāmaki Makaurau in September. Tane’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as previous winners have predominantly come from Māori immersion schools like Te Kura Māori o Porirua. His success marks a significant milestone for Mana College and puts the school on the map in the Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition.

Special acknowledgments were extended to the whānau and the supportive community, whose collective efforts and encouragement have been instrumental in this success.
