This June, Porirua is celebrating its local businesses with a series of free events and talks, providing opportunities for business owners and customers alike to connect, share knowledge, and be inspired. The Porirua City Council has organised a range of activities aimed at fostering community support and business growth during a time when the economy is challenging for many.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker emphasised the importance of these events in light of the current economic climate. “The increasing cost of living and downturn in the economy is hard on everyone, and these events provide the opportunity for businesses to get in front of their customers, as well as to meet others in business and be inspired by the amazing speakers we have lined up,” she said.
The speaker lineup is impressive, featuring notable figures such as former Olympian Barbara Kendall, Pacific Health Plus chair John Fiso, Infometrics Chief Executive Brad Olsen, and Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Chief Executive Helmut Modlik. They will cover a diverse range of topics including the economic outlook for Porirua, running a business from a Pacific perspective, the benefits of a circular economy, and how to connect buyers with Māori and Pacific-owned businesses.
For those interested in breaking into the supermarket sector with locally-made products, the Foodstuffs emerging supplier forum will provide valuable insights. This session is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 June, from 2-4pm in the Helen Smith Room at Pātaka Art + Museum.
A highlight of the month is the Love Local Expo, now in its fifth year, which will feature 130 stallholders showcasing food, products, and community services. Mayor Baker is enthusiastic about the event, stating, “The biggest business event of the month is our Love Local Expo, where this year 130 stallholders will fill Te Rauparaha Arena selling their delicious food, products, and showcasing their community services.” The expo will take place on Saturday, 8 June, from 10am-4pm at Te Rauparaha Arena, with free entry.
Throughout June, Business Month events will be held at various locations across Porirua. While all events are free, many require pre-registration. For more information and to register for events, visit Porirua City Council’s Business Month page.
