
Porirua is set to host the 2025 Waka Ama Long Distance Nationals from Thursday, 24 April to Sunday, 27 April at Ngāti Toa Domain in Paremata. Organised by the Hoe Tonga Pacifica Waka Ama Association, the event will feature races spanning 8 to 25 kilometres, drawing top paddlers from across Aotearoa and the Pacific.

- Friday, 25 April (ANZAC Day): Fine, northerlies.
- Saturday, 26 April: A few showers, clearing and becoming fine. Northerlies.

These conditions should provide an excellent backdrop for the races.

Cultural Significance and Growth
Waka ama, holds deep cultural roots in Māori and Pacifica communities. While sprint races dominated the early competitive scene, the 2000’s saw a resurgence in long-distance events. Notably, the 42km Takapuna Beach Cup, introduced in 2007, highlighted this shift. The Long Distance Nationals have since become a premier event, celebrating endurance and cultural heritage.
