Porirua residents are being encouraged to put forward their favourite local volunteer groups, with nominations now open for the 2025 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.
The annual awards, run in partnership with Wellington Airport and local councils, celebrate the valuable contributions of community groups across the wider Wellington region, including Porirua.
Groups can be nominated in six categories:
- Arts & Culture – for projects that encourage creativity and participation in the arts.
- Education & Child/Youth Development – recognising efforts that support the growth and development of young people.
- Health & Wellbeing – for groups enhancing the physical or mental health of the community.
- Heritage & Environment – celebrating work that protects and revitalises local heritage, culture or the environment.
- Sport & Leisure – recognising those increasing participation in sports or recreational activities.
- Rising Star Award – a special category for emerging grassroots groups making a positive impact.
Winners from each region will go on to represent their area at the overall Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards, with the chance to be named Supreme Winner at a celebration dinner later in the year.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said the awards are a wonderful way to highlight the dedication of local volunteers and community organisations.

“We have an amazing network of groups and volunteers in Porirua and the awards are a great way to recognise the contribution they make to our community,” Baker said.
Last year, local group Te Kiwa Nui won the Education and Child/Youth Development category, continuing a proud tradition of Porirua’s strong presence at the awards.
Nominations close on 31 May 2025.
