Porirua residents are being encouraged to nominate their local heroes, with nominations now open for the 2025 Porirua Civic Awards — the city’s highest honour recognising outstanding community service.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said the awards provide an opportunity to celebrate individuals whose dedication and volunteer efforts have made a positive impact on the community.
“Porirua Civic Awards give us a chance to recognise and thank individual volunteers for their efforts and encourage them to keep up the good work achieving positive outcomes for Porirua city,” Baker said. “Porirua is a city with a fantastic network of volunteers. If you know someone who’s made a difference in your community, nominate them today!”
The awards include an additional category this year — service to sport — which honours individuals who have gone above and beyond for local sports clubs and organisations.
2025 Civic Award Categories:
- Community service: Compassionate service to a community organisation or multiple volunteer activities.
- Cultural & art affairs: Enhancing participation in culture, heritage, music or the arts.
- Educational service: Supporting educational and social development, especially for children and youth.
- Environmental: Leading efforts to protect or revitalise the environment.
- Health & wellbeing: Promoting the health and wellbeing of the community.
- Service to sport: Recognising exceptional commitment to sports over an extended period.
- Youth service: For 15-25 year olds demonstrating outstanding voluntary service and community involvement.
Nominations close on 19 May, with Council considering the nominations on 12 June. Award recipients will be notified later in June, ahead of the Civic Awards ceremony on 22 July.
Mayor Baker also reminded residents that nominations are open for the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards, which celebrate volunteer groups across the region.
