Ben and Claire Anderson, a British couple living in Wellington, have been named as the individuals found dead in a suspected murder-suicide at a property in Roseneath on Monday night.

Police were called to the Palliser Road home around 10.25pm for a welfare check requested by a concerned family member. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered both individuals deceased. The case is now with the coroner, and police have confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Neighbour Emma Prestidge described the couple as “lovely people” and “dream neighbours.” She said Ben had been based in New Zealand for some time, while Claire had recently settled in Wellington after travelling between the UK and New Zealand. The couple had adult children living in New Zealand and were considering relocating to Otago to be closer to them.

Ben Anderson had recently joined the Building Research Association (BRANZ) as a principal research scientist in January 2024. He previously held academic positions at the University of Otago and the University of Southampton and was known for his work on local electricity demand as part of an EU-funded fellowship.

Claire Anderson was a teacher by profession, though it is unclear whether she had secured work since returning to New Zealand.

Police have not formally released the names of the deceased, pending authorisation from the coroner. Wellington District Commander Corrie Parnell confirmed that the individuals were British nationals and said family in New Zealand had been notified.
