New Kit Fuels Confidence for Porirua’s National Games Team

Special Olympics Porirua athletes will be stepping onto the field with renewed pride this year, thanks to a $6,420 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) to fund brand-new uniforms.

The upgrade comes just in time for the National Summer Games in Christchurch, held every four years and set to be one of the most exciting events on the club’s calendar.

“It’s been over ten years since we purchased new uniforms, and we had a large number who didn’t have one,” said Helen Brookes-Smith, Events Manager for Special Olympics Porirua. “Our athletes are really stoked about looking smart in their new uniforms. This opportunity means the world to them.”

With the club expanding and adding new sports, there simply weren’t enough uniforms to go around. Many athletes, Brookes-Smith said, face financial barriers and depend on community support. “Many live in community homes, don’t have families to support them, and are on a benefit. They rely entirely on volunteers, sponsorship, and grants.”

But it’s not just about appearances. The new uniforms serve both practical and emotional purposes. “It’s very important for our athletes to have a sense of pride when representing the region,” she said. “It also helps coaches keep track of everyone during competitions, and it lifts our athletes’ confidence and sense of belonging.”

The uniforms were made possible through NZCT’s partnership with local hospitality venues The Mariner and The Sandbar. NZCT’s General Manager of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, praised the athletes’ dedication. “Their sportsmanship is exemplary, and they deserve uniforms befitting their status as sporting role models.”

Serving more than 120 athletes, Special Olympics Porirua provides training in a variety of sports including basketball, swimming, and alpine skiing. The new kit is already creating a buzz among team members.

“It’s going to be really exciting playing in new uniforms,” said one athlete. “We’re going to look really good!”
