Lao New Year Festival to Bring Colour, Culture, and Community Spirit to Porirua

Saturday 5 April 2025 at Mungavin Community Hall from 12pm to 4pm.

Families across Porirua are invited to join the vibrant celebrations of Boun Pi Mai, the Lao New Year, on Saturday 5 April 2025 at Mungavin Community Hall from 12pm to 4pm.

Hosted by the Lao Community of Wellington, the free festival promises a joyful afternoon of traditional Lao food, cultural performances, face painting, bouncy castles, and a special water blessing ceremony symbolising renewal and good fortune for the year ahead.

“This is a time for connection, reflection, and celebration,” said organisers, who are encouraging locals from all backgrounds to experience Lao culture in a welcoming, festive atmosphere.

Photos from previous events show vibrant costumes, smiling faces, and tables laden with delicious dishes—showcasing the warmth and generosity at the heart of Lao celebrations.

Supported by DP Plastering Ltd, SignzUp, and other local sponsors, the event highlights Porirua’s cultural diversity and strong community spirit.

Whether you’re reconnecting with your roots or discovering Lao traditions for the first time, Boun Pi Mai 2025 promises a fun-filled day for all.
