Becs Liua’ana Makes History as WRFU’s First Pasifika President

Rebecca ‘Becs’ Liua’ana made history last night, becoming the first woman and first Pacific Islander to be appointed President of the Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU).

Her groundbreaking appointment was announced by Chair Russell Poole at the WRFU Annual General Meeting on 26 March 2025, marking a milestone moment for the sport and its community.

Liua’ana, a respected figure in New Zealand rugby, brings extensive experience both on and off the field. In her first remarks as president, she described the appointment as deeply personal.

“It is an honour to be entrusted with such a pivotal role in the future of our great game,” Liua’ana said. “Especially being the first woman and Pacific Islander to take on this role. Rugby has always been more than just a sport — it’s a community, a source of inspiration, and a tool for growth.”

Liua’ana credited her family’s legacy and values for shaping her path. “When my parents left the Pasifika Islands of Samoa to seek a better future in New Zealand, it was always in their sights to see us reach our full potential. I need to acknowledge them, my siblings, and my family for always being my support crew in everything I do with rugby.”

She will serve a two-year term and outlined a vision of inclusiveness and collaboration. “I’m committed to listening, learning, and collaborating with everyone I come across, to help guide and shape the vision of Wellington Rugby.”

Liua’ana succeeds outgoing president Alan Muir, who held the role since 2023. WRFU expressed gratitude for Muir’s service during his tenure.

Her appointment signals a new chapter for Wellington Rugby — one shaped by legacy, diversity, and a bold commitment to the future.
