The All Whites are headed to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over New Caledonia at Eden Park, sealing their place at football’s biggest tournament next year in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
After a tense, goalless first half, goals from Michael Boxall, Kosta Barbarouses and Elijah Just gave Darren Bazeley’s side the result they needed, capping off a perfect qualifying campaign in front of 25,000 jubilant fans.
New Caledonia proved tough to break down early on, frustrating the home side with a gritty defensive effort and a standout performance from goalkeeper Rocky Nyikéïne. Star striker Chris Wood was central to the All Whites’ attack but was denied repeatedly before leaving the field with a thigh injury just after the hour mark.
Ironically, Wood’s substitution proved pivotal. Moments after his exit, Boxall rose highest to head in from a corner, giving New Zealand the breakthrough they had been searching for.
Substitute Barbarouses doubled the lead shortly after, coolly chipping Nyikéïne to spark celebrations throughout Eden Park. With momentum firmly in their favour, the All Whites finished strong, with Elijah Just slotting home in the 80th minute to seal the result.
The final whistle was met with cheers as the crowd celebrated the All Whites’ return to the world stage. For head coach Darren Bazeley, the victory was the culmination of months of preparation and a campaign marked by composure and consistency.
With qualification secured, attention now turns to preparing for the 2026 tournament—New Zealand’s third World Cup appearance and their first since 2010.
