One person died and two others were injured in a two-car collision on the Wellington motorway late Saturday night.
Emergency services were called to the northbound lane of State Highway 1 at Kaiwharawhara around 11:30pm, where two vehicles had collided.
The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed. A passenger from that vehicle and the driver of the second car were both transported to Wellington Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The Serious Crash Unit attended and is investigating the cause of the collision.
The motorway was closed for several hours and reopened at approximately 3:45am.
