Police are investigating after three people were hospitalised in Wairarapa over the weekend after ingesting an unknown substance believed to be cocaine.
Emergency services were called to a residential property in Tinui after the individuals became unwell after taking the illicit substance. They received medical treatment and are expected to recover fully.
A police search of the property resulted in the seizure of cannabis and a firearm. A man has since appeared in court in relation to these matters.
Authorities suspect the unknown substance may be an opioid and are working to identify its source to prevent further harm to the community.
The inter-agency group Drug Information and Alerts New Zealand (DIANZ) has issued more details on the incident through its High Alert page, alongside harm reduction advice.
Police are urging anyone with information about the substance or its distribution to contact them via the 105 service or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
