The Wellington Phoenix women have reignited their A-League playoff hopes with a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Western Sydney Wanderers at Porirua Park.

Late goals from Mebae Tanaka and Olivia Fergusson secured the victory, snapping Phoenix’s five-game winless streak and moving them just a point outside the top six.

Western Sydney took the lead in the first half through Bronte Trew, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up to score into an empty net. Despite Wellington’s early attacking intent, they struggled to break through until the closing stages.

Phoenix coach Paul Temple credited his substitutes for making the difference.

“Mebae has that x-factor, and we were waiting for a moment like that,” Temple said. “As soon as her goal went in, it gave the whole team new life, and Fergie took her chance brilliantly.”

Tanaka’s stunning strike levelled the match with 15 minutes to play before Fergusson sealed the win in the 86th minute, converting a cross from substitute Zoe McMeeken.

The atmosphere at Porirua Park added to the occasion, with families soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the spectacle. One Wellington mother praised the venue and the team’s performance.

“We will absolutely be coming back. What a lovely ground, and the girls played so well—we really enjoyed our afternoon here at Porirua Park,” she said.

The Phoenix lifted the Sister City Cup for the fourth straight match and will now turn their focus to a crucial away fixture against Sydney FC next Saturday.
