Porirua Grand Traverse Celebrates 20 Years of Adventure

One of the region’s most beloved multisport events, the Porirua Grand Traverse (PGT), is marking its 20th anniversary with record participation expected for this year’s race on Sunday, April 6.

Since its first event in 2006, which saw 240 competitors tackle Porirua’s rugged landscapes, PGT has grown into a major community festival, attracting more than 1000 participants by 2020.

Event manager Michael Jacques credits the event’s success to its inclusivity and strong local support. “Our motto is ‘all ages, all abilities, all amazing’—we want PGT to be one of the most inclusive endurance events in the country,” he says.

The event offers a variety of challenges, including a fun run, fun bike, multisport and duathlon races, mountain biking, and mountain running. Over the years, the PGT has drawn elite athletes, including Olympic and world champions, while also encouraging locals to explore their backyard.

Among its past winners is Deb Lynch, a three-time PGT champion who recently claimed victory in the South Island’s iconic Coast to Coast event.

With 120 volunteers needed to ensure the event runs smoothly, Jacques acknowledges the staggering number of people who have contributed to its success over two decades.

While the organising trust may celebrate after race day, the focus now is on preparing for what is shaping up to be one of the biggest turnouts yet.
