Porirua City Council Seeks Public Input on Naming Policy Update

Porirua City Council is inviting residents to share their thoughts on an updated Naming Policy that will guide how new streets, parks, and facilities are named in the future.

The revised policy aims to reflect Porirua’s diverse cultures, histories, and connections to the environment. Mayor Anita Baker emphasised the importance of community input and the partnership with Ngāti Toa to ensure names honour the city’s shared heritage.

“This policy isn’t about renaming existing places but setting themes for new names as Porirua grows,” Baker said.

The proposed principles include celebrating names of significance to the community, recognising historical figures and events, and incorporating significant geographical features and native flora and fauna. Ngāti Toa will also have a role in suggesting and endorsing names that honour Māori history.

Residents can provide feedback through an 11-question survey on the Porirua City Council website. Submissions close at 5pm on Tuesday, 11 March.
