The Girmit

Pātaka Art + Museum, Porirua | Friday, 28 February 2025 | 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

An immersive and moving theatrical experience, The Girmit, is set to take centre stage at Pātaka Art + Museum as part of the NZ Fringe Festival 2025. Created by performer and composer Nadia Freeman, the production sheds light on the untold history of Indian indentured labourers sent to Fiji.

Blending live sound sampling, poetry, and historical narration, The Girmit tells the harrowing stories of over two million Indians who were coerced or kidnapped into indentured servitude. The performance is presented in partnership with The Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ, the National Library of New Zealand, and Pātaka Art + Museum.

Freeman’s acclaimed work, which won Outstanding Technical Achievement at the Dunedin Fringe Festival, has been described as “a powerful, mesmerising, and moving theatre experience” by Theatreview. The show’s 2022 Wellington debut was a sell-out, and organisers expect another high demand for tickets.

A special sensory relaxed performance will take place at Pātaka alongside the Cry of The Stolen People exhibition. The following night, The Girmit will also be performed at the National Library of New Zealand in Wellington.

Tickets are available now, with general admission priced at $10 and concessions at $5.
