Nestled at the front entrance of Outlet City Mall in Tawa, Coffee Joint isn’t just a place to grab a great flat white—it’s a business with a purpose. Owners Barry Prescott and Anna Gillon started the coffee cart in 2021 to create a safe working environment for their son, Luke, who has disabilities. Since then, it has become a beloved stop for commuters, locals, and even dedicated customers traveling from Palmerston North for their famous caramel slice.
What Makes Coffee Joint Stand Out?
“We use Mojo Coffee—it’s consistently great, and their support is outstanding. But what really brings people back is our customer service,” says Barry. The cart has built a community of regulars who enjoy not just the coffee but also the friendly banter with their team of passionate baristas.
Popular Drinks & Special Treats

Flat whites reign supreme, but their Fruit Smashes—real fruit pieces blended into a refreshing slushy—are also a hit. Seasonal specials, like Dracula’s Delight (an iced hot chocolate with whipped cream and cherry syrup) and their Easter-inspired flavoured hot chocolates, keep things exciting. And for those with a sweet tooth? Their gluten-free caramel slice is legendary, drawing in customers from all over.
A Local Favourite in the Coffee Scene
After three years in business, Coffee Joint has developed a strong community. “It’s a delight being part of people’s lives,” says Anna. “I love the connections made over coffee—it’s amazing how often customers find a tradesperson or a new friend while waiting for their order.”
