A 34-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police discovered two firearms and shotgun ammunition following a traffic stop in Cannons Creek.
The arrest took place around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 4 February, when police stopped a vehicle after identifying a person of interest in the passenger seat. The man was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.
A subsequent search of his nearby home on Wednesday, 5 February, uncovered two firearms, shotgun ammunition, and gang insignia allegedly linked to an incident in January.
The man is set to reappear in the Porirua District Court on Friday, 21 February, facing charges including the prohibited display of gang insignia in a public place, burglary, male assaults female, intentional damage, speaking threateningly, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Police are also considering further firearms-related charges.
Detective Sergeant Vincent Smylie said removing unlawfully possessed firearms from the streets is a key priority.
“We will continue to target offenders who show little regard for the community, including violent offenders and those who unlawfully possess firearms,” Detective Sergeant Smylie says.
