An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 struck 17 km from Pahiatua at 11:26 pm on Tuesday night. The tremor was widely felt across the lower North Island, including in Levin, Wellington, and surrounding areas.

The quake originated at a shallow depth, which may have contributed to its widespread impact. While reports of light to moderate shaking have been submitted by residents, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

Civil Defence reminds residents to “Drop, Cover, and Hold” during seismic activity and to check their emergency plans and supplies. Those near the epicentre are encouraged to inspect their homes for any structural damage and ensure gas, water, and electricity lines remain intact.
