Porirua’s literary legacy was cemented just before Christmas, with the unveiling of the fifth and final sculpture in the Porirua Writers’ Walk. The artwork honours Elizabeth Knox, an award-winning author with deep connections to the area.

The installation was made possible through the efforts of the Porirua Community Arts Panel (PCA), which has tirelessly fundraised to celebrate writers who have strong ties to the city. Their goal is to promote local art and culture, with the Writers’ Walk being a key achievement.

Designed by Wellington artist Keri-Mei Zagrobelna, the latest sculpture depicts a swan crafted from aluminium and zinc. The artwork draws inspiration from Knox’s 1992 novel Treasure, with an engraved passage referencing Pāuatahanui Inlet. The sculpture is located along the Harbourside Walkway, near Pirate’s Cove mini golf.

Knox, who lived in Paremata for 12 years, formed a strong connection to Porirua’s harbour, frequently travelling past it by train to school in Tawa. She selected Zagrobelna, who once studied at Whitireia’s Porirua Campus, to create the sculpture due to their close relationship.

Porirua City Council has supported the Writers’ Walk since its inception, providing land for the sculptures and managing the project. Ongoing maintenance is also handled by the Council.

Mayor Anita Baker says the project reflects the city’s commitment to public art and cultural enrichment. “We are lucky to have groups such as the PCA who work hard to fundraise to make beautiful works of art such as these accessible for the people of Porirua. The Writers’ Walk really adds to the rich experience of public art we have in this city,” she says.

The Writers’ Walk began in 2015, with its first sculpture commemorating Te Rangihaeata, a renowned wordsmith. Other honourees include local writer Patricia Grace, historian Michael King, and poet Alistair Te Ariki Campbell.

This final sculpture marks the completion of a significant cultural initiative, ensuring the stories of Porirua’s literary figures continue to inspire both residents and visitors for generations to come.
