Police are maintaining a visible presence in the Hutt Valley and Porirua today as they monitor the funeral of a prominent gang member, following the homicide in Naenae last week.
The funeral began this morning in Wainuiomata, with a procession planned to move through the Hutt Valley before concluding at Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Porirua.
Acting Hutt Valley Area Commander, Inspector Shaun Lingard, says, “Our aim is to provide the space for the man’s family and attendees to grieve, while ensuring the law is upheld.”
Inspector Lingard notes that Police have been in contact with the community and gang leaders to set clear expectations regarding behaviour during the proceedings.
Officers from across Wellington, supported by Police from outside the region and specialist teams, have been deployed to ensure safety and order. Multiple checkpoints have been established to monitor the procession, and officers are patrolling key areas.
“Unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated,” says Inspector Lingard.
Police urge residents to call 111 for immediate safety concerns and use 105 for non-urgent matters.
