Residents in Wellington were startled awake this Sunday morning as a shallow earthquake struck the region.
The magnitude 3.9 quake, recorded at 6:33 a.m., occurred at a depth of 14 kilometres, with its epicentre 10 kilometres east of Lower Hutt. GeoNet classified the quake as moderate.
Nearly 9,000 individuals reported feeling the tremor on GeoNet’s website shortly after it occurred. Reports described the quake as short but sharp, with some describing it as a “strong jolt.”
Local authorities have not reported any injuries or significant damage, but the event served as a reminder of Wellington’s susceptibility to seismic activity. GeoNet urges residents to check their earthquake preparedness plans regularly.
This marks the latest in a series of minor quakes in the region this year, underscoring the importance of readiness for a potentially larger event. Follow this link to check out Wremo’s Earthquake Readiness Plan: https://www.wremo.nz/hazards/earthquakes/earthquake-planning-guide/
