Public transport users are set to face additional costs, with Metlink announcing a new 1.5 percent card processing fee for Snapper card top-ups made via credit or debit cards on the Snapper app or credit cards at self-service kiosks. The fee will take effect on 2 December 2024.
Metlink cites the rising popularity of app-based payments and increasing operational costs as reasons for introducing the fee, stating it is no longer viable to absorb these charges. “We want to ensure we can continue providing quality services while adapting to evolving payment trends,” the agency explains.
The fee will be applied to the transaction total, with users notified before payment. For example, a $20 top-up will cost $20.30, with the full $20 credited to the card.
Notably, EFTPOS and debit card transactions at Snapper kiosks will remain exempt, offering users an alternative to avoid the surcharge.
The move has sparked concerns among commuters, many of whom already grapple with rising living costs. Critics argue this is another financial burden on public transport users who rely on the system daily.
