A Porirua-based social enterprise, The Native Loom, founded by Darapureddy Sneha, is hosting a hands-on block printing workshop in collaboration with the Porirua Multicultural Council. This event, set to take place on 23 November at Hartham Place South, aims to immerse participants in the traditional art of wooden block printing.
Sneha’s vision behind The Native Loom is to create sustainable opportunities for artisan communities while fostering a love for textile art within the local community. Participants will learn the techniques of block printing, explore the historical roots of this art form, and take home their unique, hand-printed creations.
“We believe in offering sensory and creative experiences that allow people to engage deeply with the art and culture behind textiles,” says Sneha, who emphasises the connection between creativity and community support.
With a fee of $65, the workshop includes all materials and offers attendees the opportunity to make and take home five personalized items, including greeting cards, tote bags, and napkins. Sneha adds that this initiative is not just about learning an art form but about connecting with the stories of the artisans who craft these traditional tools and designs.
This workshop is part of The Native Loom’s broader mission to empower artisans and spread cultural appreciation through textile art. For more information and booking details, visit www.thenativeloom.com.
