Massey University Threatens to Cut it’s Students’ Association

Students at Massey University are rallying against a recent decision to cut 2025 funding for Te Tira Ahu Pae, the official Massey University Students’ Association, warning that the move threatens to undermine student morale, independence, and essential campus services. A petition urging the university to reverse its decision has quickly gained traction, reflecting widespread concerns among students and community members.

Te Tira Ahu Pae, operated by students and supported by a dedicated team of staff, serves as a critical platform for advocacy, representation, and student life at Massey University. The association manages a range of services, from organizing events and supporting clubs to overseeing student-run media like Radio Control and Massive Magazine. “The association gives voice to our diverse student body and fosters an inclusive environment,” says a Micah Geiringer from the student group, stressing that its independence is key to providing conflict-free support and unbiased representation for students.

The university’s plan to end funding for Te Tira Ahu Pae in 2025 would shift the management of these services internally, effectively reducing the association’s autonomy. Supporters of the petition argue that this change could compromise the integrity of the support Te Tira Ahu Pae offers, as the association’s advocacy efforts would become more closely tied to university administration. They believe that an independent student association is essential for maintaining a space where students can freely express their concerns without university oversight.

The petition emphasises three core points: a call for the university to reinstate funding, the importance of maintaining the association’s independence, and the impact of funding on vital services. “Funding supports the provision of student representation, core staff, advocacy, events, clubs, and societies,” reads one section of the petition, adding that these services are essential to enhancing the university experience.

Students argue that instead of defunding Te Tira Ahu Pae, the university should work collaboratively with the association to address any operational issues. They believe a transparent and cooperative approach would better serve the student body without sacrificing the independence that has made the association a trusted voice for students across the university.
