Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a residential property in Hanson Grove, Stokes Valley, which has left an 81-year-old man in critical condition. Emergency services responded to the fire at approximately 3:10 a.m. today. The man, who was found in critical condition, was transported to Wellington Hospital.
Detective Inspector Haley Ryan says the fire is being treated as suspicious. It is the third fire at the same block of flats in recent weeks, with earlier fires occurring on 10 and 14 October, both in the early morning hours. Authorities are investigating a potential link between these incidents.
The area around the flats has been cordoned off, and a forensic scene examination is underway. The examination is being conducted with assistance from Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the Environmental Science and Research team.
Detective Inspector Ryan appeals to the public for assistance, particularly from anyone who may have CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, or any other relevant information. “Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in our investigation,” says Ryan. She urges anyone who was in the area during any of the three fires, whether or not they witnessed the incidents, to come forward.
