A rāhui, a customary Māori restriction, has been established near Eastbourne, Lower Hutt, following the recovery of Terrence Jameson’s body from the water on Monday. This temporary restriction, a mark of respect and protection for the deceased and his whānau, took effect after a karakia was performed at Point Arthur, led by Kura Moeahu, Chair of Waiwhetū Marae and Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa.
The rāhui spans from Lion’s Rock out towards Mākaro (Ward Island) and extends southward to a point near Lake Kōhangapiripiri. During this period, Te Āti Awa iwi has requested that the community refrain from gathering kaimoana (seafood) and avoid recreational activities within the designated area.
This restriction will remain in place until Saturday, 2 November, lifting at 7 a.m., to allow the community time to honour Mr. Jameson’s memory and give space for healing.
