Katha – Stories of the Girmit Women of Fiji, an exhibition celebrating the lived experiences and history of Fijian Indian women, is being hosted at Pātaka Art + Museum from 21 September to 3 November 2024. The event, organised by Seema Singh and supported by Nirmala Balram and Sunita Narayan, is free to attend and open to the public.
The exhibition offers visitors a chance to connect with the history of the Girmit women, whose contributions remain integral not only to Fiji’s legacy but also to the broader Pacific region. Singh says “We are sharing personal ancestral stories, capturing how we have evolved to shape our unique Pacific culture.”
A line-up of events has been organised to complement the exhibition:
- 21 Sep, 2pm: Opening ceremony
- 28 Sep, 7pm: Folk songs evening
- 11 Oct, 12 noon: Artist talk by Seema Singh
- 26 Oct, 3pm: “Their story lives on in us” presentation by Pritika Narayan
Singh’s project invites reflection on how Fijian Indian heritage influences the present day. Group visits can be arranged through email at [email protected]. Additionally, attendees can stay informed through the exhibition’s Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/livesofgirmitwomenfiji
The exhibit promises a meaningful cultural experience that bridges history, art, and storytelling, fostering a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and contributions of Girmit women to the region.
