Major infrastructure upgrades are set to begin in early November in eastern Porirua, causing temporary road closures. The work, led by Porirua City Council, Wellington Electricity, Wellington Water, and Kāinga Ora, is focused on improving the electricity network and increasing the capacity of the drinking water system.
The first phase of the Waitangirua and Te Ara Kāpehu (Whitby) Link Roads Project will involve the full closure of Waitangirua Link Road for up to five months. The closure, from Warspite Avenue to the T-junction with Te Ara Kāpehu, will allow the installation of new power cables and water pipes.
Mike Mendonça, General Manager of Infrastructure for Porirua City Council, says this approach minimizes disruption. “We are using a ‘dig once’ approach to avoid multiple closures. Full closure allows us to work more efficiently and finish faster,” says Mendonça.
Once the first phase is complete, a partial closure will affect Te Ara Kāpehu Link Road for two months. Despite the closures, Porirua Mayor Anita Baker emphasizes the long-term benefits for the growing community. “This work will ensure future resilience for our power and water networks, vital for our rapidly expanding eastern suburbs,” says Baker.
The Council also plans to remove wilding pines, clear vegetation, and update speed signage during the closures. Residents are advised to plan alternative routes and expect delays.
