The Porirua City Council has approved the updated Tamariki and Rangatahi Strategy and Action Plan 2024-2027, incorporating input from around 800 young people. The strategy reinforces the importance of tamariki (children) and rangatahi (youth) to the city, aiming to create thriving communities where young people feel safe, healthy, and engaged.
To ensure its relevance, the council engaged directly with tamariki and rangatahi through surveys, classroom workshops, and interviews, gathering insights from those aged 10 to 24. Porirua Mayor Anita Baker highlights the value of this youth-centric approach, saying “They have told us what they value, and they feel listened to.” Key themes include an appreciation for outdoor spaces, mental and physical health, and safety.
The strategy is accompanied by a three-year action plan, focusing on partnerships and the wellbeing of young people. Financial backing for its implementation is part of the 2024-2034 Long-term Plan, allowing the city to address evolving issues like mental health and climate change.
