The Parirua Māori Ward was established in 2021 to ensure Māori representation on the Council and was first used in the 2022 local elections. The seat is currently held by the highly respected Deputy Mayor, Kylie Wihapi. The upcoming poll will ask voters whether they wish to maintain this separate Māori Ward for those enrolled on the Māori roll or to integrate it into Porirua’s General wards.

Mayor Anita Baker emphasized the importance of voter participation in this decision, noting the effectiveness of the Māori ward in Porirua. She expressed disappointment over the necessity of the poll but encouraged all eligible residents to enrol and vote.

Council’s commitment to partnership with mana whenua, highlighted by its 2017 agreement with Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira and the adoption of the Maungaroa 2050 Māori Strategy, underscores the importance of this decision to the local community.

Porirua’s voter turnout was 37% in the 2022 elections, and efforts are underway to boost public engagement for the next local election, scheduled for 11 October 2025. Residents can check their enrolment status and eligibility by visiting vote.nz or contacting the Electoral Commission.
