The Plimmerton Boating Club has received a significant boost with a $35,000 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) to repair its main jetty, a vital community asset. The jetty, a hub for various activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming, was severely damaged by recent storms, leading to part of it breaking away from its moorings.
Sailing Academy Officer Todd Olson emphasised the jetty’s importance: “Our main jetty is crucial for all our boaties and fishermen/women. It’s not just for launching and retrieving vessels; it’s a popular spot for public fishing, swimming, and enjoying the views.” The damage has forced the club to fence off the last four metres of the jetty for safety, with urgent repairs needed before the upcoming summer. Olson noted that while the NZCT grant has brought them closer to their funding goal, an additional $15,000 is still required to complete the necessary repairs.
Richard Percy, a long-time club member, highlighted the jetty’s role in supporting young sailors. “Having well-maintained infrastructure is key to attracting and retaining young sailors. The jetty is essential for launching boats and handling emergencies, especially during large events,” says Percy.
The community also feels the impact of the jetty’s condition. Regular visitors Maria and Heath Gair expressed their connection to the site: “Our family regularly visits the Plimmerton wharf for fishing, sailing, hunting through the rock pools, and when the structure has been safe, to jetty-jump! It’s a hub for families throughout the year and offers so much simple fun for kids and adults alike.”
NZCT’s GM of Grants, Marketing, and Communications, Ben Hodges, shared the trust’s enthusiasm for supporting the project: “We’re thrilled to help out with this local landmark. The jetty is a big part of the community, and keeping it in great shape helps everyone enjoy it for years to come.”
The Plimmerton Boating Club, established in 1925, has been a cornerstone of the local sailing and boating community for nearly a century. As they prepare to celebrate their centennial anniversary next year, the club remains committed to fostering a vibrant water sports community.
