A new initiative aimed at preserving and promoting Pacific languages through media has been launched in New Zealand. The Moana Reo Media Fund, introduced by Pacific Media Network and the Ministry for Pacific Peoples, is designed to empower creators to produce innovative media content that celebrates Pacific cultures and languages.
This fund comes at a critical time, addressing the growing need for authentic representation in the media.
“This Fund represents our dedication to supporting and uplifting Pacific communities by providing a platform for their stories to be heard.” – says Don Mann, CEO of Pacific Media Network.
Mann emphasized the importance of investing in projects that celebrate Pacific languages, highlighting the potential to create a more inclusive and representative media landscape.
Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone, Secretary for Pacific Peoples, echoed this sentiment, expressing the Ministry’s pride in partnering on this important initiative. “Media plays a crucial role in reflecting the diverse cultures of Pacific peoples in New Zealand. By supporting projects in Pacific languages, we preserve our cultural heritage and promote pride and identity among Pacific communities across the country,” says Clifford-Lidstone.
The fund will open on 26 August 2024 and offers several funding pools: up to $50,000 for around ten diverse projects, up to $100,000 for five youth-focused projects, and one signature project with funding up to $220,000. The initiative is open to creators, filmmakers, journalists, and content producers passionate about telling stories in Pacific languages.
Applications will close on Friday, 13 September 2024, at 5 p.m. For more information visit: https://pmn.co.nz/moana-reo-media-fund
