Porirua City has achieved accreditation as a Committed Welcoming Community under the Welcoming Communities – Te Waharoa ki ngā Hapori programme, a significant milestone reflecting the city’s dedication to inclusivity.

Mayor Anita Baker highlighted the substantial efforts made since joining the programme in early 2023. “This accreditation reflects some amazing achievements recently in engaging more with our different communities to ensure that they are included in important democratic processes for our city,” says the Mayor. The city has seen enhanced celebrations of its diverse cultures, including events like Colombian Independence Day, the Hindu festival Holi, and the Lunar New Year, all supported by the Council.

The Welcoming Communities programme, overseen by Immigration New Zealand, comprises four accreditation stages: Committed, Established, Advanced, and Excelling. Porirua’s current status as a Committed Welcoming Community demonstrates its commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for all residents.

Andrew Lockhart, National Manager Refugee and Migrant Support at Immigration New Zealand, commended Porirua’s efforts. “This accreditation shows that Porirua values newcomers to the city and is committed to building a welcoming and inclusive community,” says Lockhart. “It also shows that active steps are being taken to create an environment where all residents can thrive and belong.”

A crucial aspect of achieving this accreditation was the partnership with Ngāti Toa, formalized in February, underscoring the city’s dedication to forging strong connections with new residents and achieving better outcomes.

According to the 2023 Census, about 14 per cent of Porirua’s population hails from regions including Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. Additionally, some of the 26 per cent of the population with Pacific heritage may identify as migrants. Mayor Baker emphasized the importance of these partnerships, noting, “It’s beneficial for Council and for the communities for us to have strong partnerships in place so we can meaningfully engage with more people.”

Porirua’s recognition as a Welcoming Community marks a significant step in its journey towards inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and fostering a sense of belonging for all its residents.
