Starting Monday 22 July, Porirua Railway Station will see the introduction of a new safety initiative aimed at enhancing security and fostering a sense of community. This effort has been organised to address growing concerns about safety at transport hubs, specifically targeting issues of violence and anti-social behaviour.

In response to local concerns, the Rangatahi Initiative Board, along with the Regional Public Service Commissioner’s Office, initiated a pilot program involving local youth providers. This program, which ran from Term 4, 2023 to Term 2, 2024 – has set the groundwork for the current collaborative effort. The new initiative, funded by the Ministry of Social Development’s Projects in Communities Fund, will see three safety officers, known as Mau Te Rongo Navigators, patrolling Porirua Station during peak times: 7am to 9am and 3.30pm to 5.30pm. These officers will be active for the next six months.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker expresses her support for the initiative, emphasising its importance in making the community feel safe and connected. “We want everyone to feel safe and welcome in Porirua, so we’re happy to have been able to help pull this fantastic initiative together,” says Mayor Baker.

The Mau Te Rongo Navigators will work closely with community police patrols to provide extra visibility and reassurance to the public. They will also engage with public transport users, build connections with support agencies, and offer insights into emerging risks and challenges.

The initiative is a result of efforts by a diverse working group that includes Piri’anga Alofa Pacific and Community Services, the Regional Public Service Office, The 502, Porirua Police, Transdev, Metlink, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, and the Porirua City Council.

Mayor Baker highlighted the positive impact of the navigators, stating, “The Mau Te Rongo navigators will be on hand to engage, assist, or just have a chat with anyone who needs assistance. This is a really positive step, and we look forward to seeing them out and about.”

The Mau Te Rongo Navigators’ introduction aligns with the start of the school term on Monday, 22 July, ensuring a timely enhancement of safety measures at Porirua Station.
