Porirua residents gearing up for the Hurricanes vs Chiefs semi-final this Saturday, 15 June, can expect a smoother commute thanks to Metlink’s expanded services. In anticipation of a large turnout at Sky Stadium, Metlink is increasing the capacity of buses and trains to ensure fans can travel to and from the game with ease.
With kick-off set for 4:35 pm, Metlink is deploying larger buses on key Wellington city routes before and after the match. Additionally, extra carriages have been added to trains on the Kāpiti-Poirura line, providing more seats and space for passengers.
The enhancements don’t stop there. Several additional train services on these lines will also be available once the game ends, including provisions for potential extra time due to golden point scenarios. This comprehensive approach aims to mitigate congestion and ensure a hassle-free journey for rugby enthusiasts.
Samantha Gain, Metlink’s Group Manager, emphasized the importance of these measures. “We’ve added larger buses and extra train carriages to key routes to accommodate the anticipated surge in passengers. Fans are encouraged to use their Snapper cards to enjoy half-price, off-peak fares and to travel early to avoid the rush,” she said.
The increased services are part of a broader effort to handle the expected crowd of over 25,000 attendees. With Sky Stadium car parking sold out, public transport remains the best option for many. Fans are advised to plan their journey using Metlink’s Journey Planner and to note that drop-offs after 2:30 pm are restricted to Bunny Street or Thorndon Quay, unless mobility needs are indicated.
Hurricanes CEO, Avan Lee, is enthusiastic about the upcoming match and the support from Metlink. “Saturday is going to be awesome. We will have a great crowd and an exciting game against the Chiefs. We encourage fans to get to the stadium early, with gates opening at 2:30 pm,” Lee stated.
For those heading to the game, early travel is recommended to ensure a timely arrival. With additional entertainment, including live performers and pre-game activities, arriving early will allow fans to fully enjoy the experience.
As the Hurricanes prepare for their most significant game in years, Porirua residents can look forward to an exciting day of Rugby.
