Despite initial struggles, the Hurricanes’ second-half surge secured their emphatic win, showcasing the team’s resilience and skill.
Led by Jordie Barrett, who captained the side in Brad Shields’ absence, the Hurricanes overcame a nervy start. Their fierce defence even prevented the Hurricanes from scoring in the opening 20 minutes, a first for the season.
The Rebels took an early 3-0 lead, but Hurricanes prop Pasilio Tosi soon powered over the line to shift momentum. Despite another Rebels penalty narrowing the gap to 7-6, crucial errors by Carter Gordon allowed the Hurricanes to extend their lead. Centre Josh Moorby capitalized just before halftime, making it 14-6.
The second half saw the Hurricanes dominate. Jordie Barrett broke through to set up Brayden Iose for a try, followed by quick scores from Asafo Aumua and Devon Flanders, pushing the lead to 35-6. Rebels winger Lachie Anderson responded with two tries, but it was too little, too late. Late tries from Du’Plessis Kirifi and Kini Naholo sealed the Hurricanes’ victory.
